Mary Small (Kal-La-Tee, New Indian Basket), of Jemez Pueblo, has been an active potter since the 1950s. Her specialties include matte polychrome jars, bowls, wedding vases, storytellers and miniatures. She and her husband Simon work together to make beautiful and distinctive pottery.
Mary was the IACA’s 2002 Artist of the Year. Mary’s work is included in “Southwestern Pottery: Anasazi to Zuni” by Hayes and Blom; Gregory Schaaf´s “Southern Pueblo Pottery Biographies”; and Berger and Schiffer´s “Pueblo and Navajo Contemporary Pottery”.
As is typical of her best work, this large wedding vase has sharp graphics and strong colors on a wonderful shape - a traditional wedding vase. The addition of two fine turquoise cabochons give this vase a unique identity. This vase is signed "Simon & Mary Small, 1990."
The vase is in very good old condition with one visible scuff on the body of the vase - a picture of that follows. Hardly noticeable but a pic of the smudge is included for accuracy.
