Early Navajo butterfly pin

Early Navajo butterfly pin

Circa 1930s, this is a heavy, slightly crude stamped butterfly pin. Made before figural pins became somewhat formulaic and quickly produced, this butterfly is heavy with relatively thick silver and wire used for the wings, and antennas and a solid silver button for the head and set with a single light blue round turquoise. I think the shelf-like pin mount should date this but I haven’t found the right reference yet. The carefully curled proboscis would allow one to wear this as a pendant as well. The butterfly measures 2″ tall x 1 1/2″ wide. Tarnish/patina is intact. No cracks or repairs.

Ring by Loren Begay, Lander Blue turquoise

Lander Blue turquoise

Really, Lander Blue! A friend and her husband bought this ring in the 1970s as a contemporary piece by Loren T. Begay, also known as “Running Horse.” It is a nicely made sterling silver ring with Begay’s silver leaves surrounding, in essentially a shadowbox form, a cabochon of Lander Blue turquoise. The stone is a classic piece of Lander Blue with bright blue turquoise spots in an evenly distributed dark matrix. Dense, dark, very nice. I do not have a carat weight for the stone but the stone itself measures approximately 1/2″ x 1/4″ and you can see the depth/height in the photos. The total top platform that holds and surrounds the stone measures 1 1/8″ x 5/8.” The ring is about a size 5 1/2″ with no issues or problems.

Early Navajo Blue Gem turquoise bracelet

Circa 1930, this is a wonderfully worn square and twisted wire bracelet set with four oval cabochons. The stones are all very worn and cracked but they have the lovely warm blue shades of old Blue Gem. This classic bracelet shows its years of wear with a pleasing softness of all the edges, substantial wear along both edges and, the loss of two silver drops on the shank. Inside circumference is 5 3/8″ with the current opening of just over an inch.

Silver aerial gunner wings on Navajo cuff bracelet

Silver aerial gunner wings on Navajo cuff bracelet

A traditionally hand made Navajo style cuff with domed button bump ups at the terminals but its central feature is silver bombadier wings. The bombadier insignia measures 3 1/4″ wingtip to wingtip. It appears that a gunner’s badge was altered and added to a cuff. I don’t know if the cuff existed before the addition or, if the whole piece was made at one time. The bracelet is very worn and wear polished with soft edges. Note that the wings are not perfectly centered on the bracelet. The bracelet is a medium size at 5 5/8″ inside circumference with a current 1 1/4″ gap. In excellent old condition with the mentioned wear, some old fire scale shadows and slight corrosion at the solder joints (lead or copper in the solder).

Vintage Zuni Lucy Ceshu 5 piece bird set

Vintage Zuni Lucy Ceshu 5 piece bird set

Five individual masterworks by Zuni artist, Lucy Ceshu.

This is a rare large set consisting of a bracelet, ring, clip earrings and a brooch. I’ve seen this design called birds or “melon heads.” These figures have tiny details including dots and dash inlays carefully set into the background stone or shell. Inlaid with jet, turquoise and shell.

Although examples of this maker’s work have been around for awhile, the creator of this design is still somewhat debated. I’ve heard these attributed to Lucy Ceshu and to John Lucio. Personally, I lean more toward Lucy Ceshu as John Lucio’s work is usually heftier, with chunkier cuts and his famous eagle dancer inlays have a completely different look, often with a “pillow cut” shell for the head, just an overall different aesthetic. Then, to confuse the maker issue, the earrings are marked with a stamped, angular “J.” And, if you look closely at the earrings, the red sections on the wings look more like coral rather than the spiny oyster used on the other, unmarked pieces. And, the unmarked pieces all include silver disks with a single dome in the center. The earrings do not have that detail. Anyway, whoever made these, all the pieces are wonderfully done.

The bracelet measures 6 1/4″ inside circumference and the center bird, 2 1/8″ top to bottom. The brooch is just under 2″ by 1 1/4″ tall. The ring is a size 8. The set is in excellent shape overall with light wear to the silver and the sets. There is a small (less than 1/8″) stable crack in the right side of the chest piece in the white shell. All stones are stable and secure.
