Eagle bolo by Ray & Eva Wyaco, Zuni

Eagle bolo by Ray & Eva Wyaco, Zuni

A striking big bolo tie of a bald eagle with matching tips of eagles’ heads. The inlays include bright white shell, jet, gold-lip shell and turquoise. The bolo is marked on the back with the signature stamp, “Ray & Eva Wayaco.” The central eagle measures approximately 4″ tall x 3″ wide. Each eagle head is about 3/4″ tall x 1 3/8″ wide. It is in excellent condition overall with small bits of soil and light wear. The unmarked Bennett clasp works well.

Old Zuni eagle bolo

Old Zuni eagle bolo

Great older Zuni inlaid bolo in the form of a bald eagle holding a snake, with matching tips of full smaller eagles. Dating this to somewhere in the 1940s. It originally had a handmade clasp, later converted to a Bennett (Pat Pend, C-31) clasp. Solid, well-done inlays of jet, natural turquoise and white shell, left just rough enough to be interesting. The central eagle measures about 2 1/4″ tall x about 2 3/8″ wide. Each eagle tip measures about 1 1/8″ tall x 1 1/4″ wide. In good old condition with wear and bits of soil stuck in corners.

Huge brooch by Presley Curley, coral, turquoise

Huge brooch by Presley Curley, coral, turquoise

A stunning brooch! By Navajo artist Presley Curley, this is a very large and impressive coral and turquoise pin. Although Presley is a Navajo silversmith, he also mastered the Zuni cluster style. Well made, the brooch has hand cut and filed bezels holding 20 red coral and 29 turquoise cabochons around the edge and nine turquoise stones in the center. The center stone has the color of Bisbee but has pyrite so it is probably Kingman or Morenci. Signed on the reverse, PC. Well made, substantial, very satisfying piece.

Vintage Navajo bolo, fine spiderweb turquoise

Vintage Navajo bolo, Number 8 spiderweb

A classic bolo tie with excellent spiderweb turquoise. A silversmith friend said this is Crescent Valley but it could also be Number 8. Signed “B M” in separate letters, this could have been made by several different smiths. Circa 1960s, nicely made with a hand cut bezel around the main stone and fine toothed bezels on the matching tips. The bolo platform measures 2 3/4″ tall x 2 1/8.” cut crystal jar or dresser box with an enameled silver collar and lid.

Old pawn silver ring with Bisbee turquoise

Old pawn silver ring with Bisbee turquoise

Good old ring with a large slab of natural smokey Bisbee. Another nifty element of this ring is the hand-filed bezel. Framed with domed bump ups on each end, hand twisted wire and drops and wild stamping on both side ovals, this is a great old piece. Not straight Navajo in style, this could have come from a Pueblo silversmith. The ring is a size eight, the top platform that holds and surrounds the stone measures 1 1/2″ x 7/8.” Appropriate wear, no issues.

Early Navajo butterfly pin

Early Navajo butterfly pin

Circa 1930s, this is a heavy, slightly crude stamped butterfly pin. Made before figural pins became somewhat formulaic and quickly produced, this butterfly is heavy with relatively thick silver and wire used for the wings, and antennas and a solid silver button for the head and set with a single light blue round turquoise. I think the shelf-like pin mount should date this but I haven’t found the right reference yet. The carefully curled proboscis would allow one to wear this as a pendant as well. The butterfly measures 2″ tall x 1 1/2″ wide. Tarnish/patina is intact. No cracks or repairs.

Ring by Loren Begay, Lander Blue turquoise

Lander Blue turquoise

Really, Lander Blue! A friend and her husband bought this ring in the 1970s as a contemporary piece by Loren T. Begay, also known as “Running Horse.” It is a nicely made sterling silver ring with Begay’s silver leaves surrounding, in essentially a shadowbox form, a cabochon of Lander Blue turquoise. The stone is a classic piece of Lander Blue with bright blue turquoise spots in an evenly distributed dark matrix. Dense, dark, very nice. I do not have a carat weight for the stone but the stone itself measures approximately 1/2″ x 1/4″ and you can see the depth/height in the photos. The total top platform that holds and surrounds the stone measures 1 1/8″ x 5/8.” The ring is about a size 5 1/2″ with no issues or problems.
