Large old San Juan Pueblo NM water pot

Out of an old New Mexican collection, this is a turn of the century Pueblo water or storage pot. It is from either Santa Clara or San Juan and most opinions lean toward San Juan. Typical of San Juan is the half polished finish on the body of the pot. Despite the wear to the surface, you can see the half polish. The pot is in good condition for its age with chips (mostly around the rim) and two definite cracks that run downward from the mouth but the pot is sound overall. The pot has not been restored and we’ve chosen not to clean, oil, wax or otherwise change the current surface. The pot measures approximately 14″ wide by 12″ high by 8 1/2″ across the rim.

Mid century enameled green satellite hot water pot

Soooo Jetsons, with a blended blue shading to green enamel, this looks like a satellite. A very usable enameled hot water or cider pot in its original stand. I think this is 1960s or so and was hardly used. Note – not for fondue as the spigot couldn’t handle cheese! In its stand, it measures 15″ tall by 12″ wide at the side rail. No notable issues or damage.

Victorian Art Nouveau enameled iris brooch

An elegant Art Nouveau enameled iris brooch. This came in its original box from H.J. Nogel & Bro Jewelers Engravers & Opticians in Lewisburg, PA. The business was established in 1892 and the brooch feels 1900-ish. Assume that it’s not silver but the hook and pin appear to be silver. No marks found. The brooch measures 2 3/8″ wide by 1 5/8″ tall.

Huge sterling & resin funky flower ring

I don’t know who made this but the style and technique are similar to Taxco’s Mexican Pluma Azteca work. The ring is sterling, marked only .925 inside. The design is a multicolored resin poured in and around the silver. Please see all the photos that describe the piece. A size 8.5, this can’t be sized as the resin set can’t be removed. The top or front of the ring measures just over an inch wide by 3/4″ tall. The word unique gets overused these days but this piece truly is unique.

Classic tramp art box

Just a great tramp art box. About the size of the cigar box that the pieces came from, the folk artist layered pieces to create additional designs on all sides and the top of the box. Probably made as a jewelry box, it is lined with purple satin. Other than the expected wear, mostly to the satin, the box has no problems, just the irregularities of handmade things. The lid is decorated with four squares – the top two set as diamonds, the bottom two as squares. You can see that the bottom right square sat at the wrong angle for awhile so the patina reflects it’s change of position – there’s a diamond-shaped shadow.

Large old Navajo pitched water jar

Hard to find in the larger, utilitarian sizes, this jar measures about 12″ tall by about 9″ wide. The basket was made with braided horsehair handles woven in and then the basket was coated and sealed with pine pitch. An old piece, I think it has gotten hot various times over the years and the pitch is a bit gloppy and puddling around the base. Normal enough for this area – our adobe walls get thicker at the base over time as the adobe settles. Speaking of which, see another great southwestern item that we have for sale, an original New Mexican adobe brick mold.

Old Acoma olla with creative Native repair

This is a 1930s olla. Once badly broken, a lady at Jemez repaired this in a most creative fashion. She used leather strips to reinforce the breaks and losses, left the leather with its original color around the rim of the olla (neatly complementing the red underbody of the pot) but she painted the leather in the design areas to match the original design. An unusual but effective fix and the pot is both attractive and interesting. 8” tall x just under 9” wide.

Austro-Hungarian silver & turquoise snake brooch

A wonderful Revival piece, a snake coiled into a figure 8 with a tail curl, hand-tooled to create his scales, holding a pendant with four small turquoise stones in his mouth. Old “C” hook clasp. I don’t know if the pendant is original to the brooch but it fits. Unmarked but I’ll guarantee this to be .800 silver or better. Tail to drop, just under 1 ¾,” just over 1 ½” wide. He’s great!

Early 19th century Bolivian coca pouch

This is a ch’uspa (in the Aymara language). This pouch woven of alpaca and vicuna fibers, made to hold coca leaves and other important items. A wonderful textile, the colors are natural, the warm brown is vicuna, the red is cochineal and the dark blue, indigo. The tufts at the opening are symbolic “ears” – a reference to the camelids that clothed and fed the Andean community that produced this piece. Even at nearly 200 years old, the cloth is still pliable and soft to the touch. A lovely historic piece. 8” x 9” at the bottom, 7 ½” at the “ears.”

Indian Lore by E. Wendell Lamb & Lawrence W Shultz, signed by 15 Native Americans.

Published in 1964 in Winona lake, Indiana, written for teachers to use to for “…the teaching of Indiana history.” From the preface, “It is the hope of the authors that this volume will find a place in many homes, in libraries, both school and public, and be used in social study classes in junior and senior high schools. Children in the lower grades also will be interested in the many illustrations. We hope it will appeal to adults as well.”

First edition after the original limited edition, red cloth boards, originally gold lettering, and dust jacket. The jacket is in poor condition and the book only fair with toning from the jacket on the facing pages and deterioration of the gold lettering. Interior pages are clean and spine is strong. There is an adhered bookplate and previous owner’s name written in ink on the inside front cover.

Native Americans who signed the book include (sorry, I can’t read all the names):
