Original ink by Howell Dodd

A hard to find original by well-known pulp fiction illustrator, Howell Dodd. I love this piece as it’s a little deceptive – you can’t quite tell what’s going on but, it’s pretty clear that he’s not working on a garden… The painting is on matboard, 12″ x 16″ The publication instructions are on a separate piece of paper, taped to the left side of the board.

Old Pawn Navajo cluster brooch

A gorgeous big old cluster brooch. Circa 1950s, like the Zuni clusters but I think Navajo made this piece due to the weight and the stamped silver spiderweb shaped applique in the middle of the brooch. Also a pendant, this is large at 2 7/8″ wide. The back is stamped “AB.” A beautiful big old piece.

Not subtle but a great older bug ring. His body is formed of two fire agates with coral legs. All set on a heavy silver base with a wide band. The back of the platform is marked repeatedly with asterisks and bear paws. I don’t know if this is a particular marker or if it is Native American. Whoever made it, a great piece. The coral pieces were carved before set and his left hind leg is in about three piece but securely set and stable in the bezel. Large, the ring is a size 10 3/4. He’s 1 1/4″ long front leg to back leg and just over 1″ wide. What a statement!

Old original pastel cat portrait

Okay, cat-lovers, this is great. Not just a cat picture, this feels like a personal portrait of someone’s loved cat. The long-haired cat is posed with a blue ribbon that compliments his or her pretty green eyes. The oval mat opening measures 10″ tall by 6″ wide. The frame measures 12 3/4″ by 8 3/4″ This is a folk art piece as the cat’s eyes are a bit crooked but then again, I’ve had cross-eyed cats. In what I think is an original frame, the portrait is in good antique condition with various loss of the loose chalk surface. Two notable areas are visible on the left side of the portrait at the outer edge of the white fur. The frame is stable with surface wear and the backing board would benefit from a few more nails

San Ildefonso brown on black olla by Carmelita Dunlap

An olla made by San Ildefonso Pueblo potter Carmelita Dunlap. This is a matte brown on polished black. Carmelita is known for detailed black on black patterns but she and her daughter worked for a time on brown fired finishes. I think this is her version of a brown on black. 5″ tall by 7 1/2″ wide. Signed on the underside in engraved script, Carmelita Dunlap. No notable problems, just the small foibles of handmade pieces and light normal wear for its age.

Yes, it’s a peach pit head folk art preacher. His head is a carved fruit pit (I think a peach) set on a carved body and scene, even to the little open book, a Bible, in his hand.
Vintage glass intaglio earrings with Saint Gonzaga

I believe these are Mexican or perhaps Spanish. I think the image on the underside of the glass is Saint Gonzaga as his attributes are a human skull and books, as here. Each earring measures about 1 1/4 inches long without the pearl dangle. Assume the pearls are cultured. Marked on the back of each, STERLING, 925.

Classic tramp art box

Just a great tramp art box. About the size of the cigar box that the pieces came from, the folk artist layered pieces to create additional designs on all sides and the top of the box. Probably made as a jewelry box, it is lined with purple satin. Other than the expected wear, mostly to the satin, the box has no problems, just the irregularities of handmade things. The lid is decorated with four squares – the top two set as diamonds, the bottom two as squares. You can see that the bottom right square sat at the wrong angle for awhile so the patina reflects it’s change of position – there’s a diamond-shaped shadow.

Victorian silver & paste brooch

A dainty, detailed little brooch, .800 silver set with 5 small paste or glass stones. As there is only one stone that is a domed cabochon (the turquoise color), assume that one is replaced.
Old Acoma olla with creative Native repair

This is a 1930s olla. Once badly broken, a lady at Jemez repaired this in a most creative fashion. She used leather strips to reinforce the breaks and losses, left the leather with its original color around the rim of the olla (neatly complementing the red underbody of the pot) but she painted the leather in the design areas to match the original design. An unusual but effective fix and the pot is both attractive and interesting. 8” tall x just under 9” wide.

An original oil painting of the Crucifixion, on canvas adhered to thick paper board. Beautifully painted, the artist was professional. I can’t quite make out the name but the signature includes the Italian region’s name “Gazizia.” The painting measures 27 ¼” x 17 ½.”.

1930s or 1940s Acoma olla

Simple, geometric and striking unsigned Acoma olla. Part of its charm, this has the slightly crooked shape of a hand-coiled pot. Typical of old Acoma pieces, the finish has “pops” in the slip on the surface. It measures approximately 8 ½” in both height and diameter.
